At the beginning of 2024, Volvo decided to tidy up its range and made two name changes. As a result, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge became EX40 and EC40, respectively (a logical change considering the launch of two other EVs, namely EX30 and EX90), while XC40 would designate ICE versions.

At launch, the XC40 was only available with gasoline and diesel engines. The range was then diversified in 2019, when the first Recharge version was added.
Up until the February 2024 name change, the Recharge moniker was used on all electrified models, whether they were plug-in hybrids or EVs.
In 2020, the XC40 also received the Recharge Electric version, which from now on is called EX40. A little simpler for everyone.
Compared to a normal XC40, the electric version betrays its power source through a cleaner look and an EV-specific closed-off grille. Otherwise, we’re looking at the same shapes and proportions.

Android Automotive
Inside, the EX40 offers the same Scandinavian minimalism as the rest of Volvo’s portfolio. The central piece consists of a clean, digital dashboard and the same vertically-positioned display that runs Android Automotive OS – which brings Google apps pre-installed directly into the car.
The benefits? When connected via with your Google account, the car’s navigation system remembers all you previous destinations from both your smartphone and your laptop/desktop computre, for example. Users also get access to Google Assistant and a number of Google Play apps. The system also allows over-the-air software updates, so there’s no need for a dealership visit.
What’s more, the Harman Kardon sound system pairs nicely with Spotify’s streaming service integrated directly into the Android Automotive menu.

One or Two Electric Motors
You can have the Volvo EX40 with a choice of one or two electric motors.
The entry-level version brings together a single electric motor good for 238 hp, paired with the standard 70-kWh battery. In Long Range guise, the same motor produces 252 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque while drawing energy from a larger, 82-kWh battery pack. The maximum estimated range is 475 kilometers on single charge for the 70-kWh version, while the larger battery offers up to 572 kilometers on single charge.
There’s also a twin-motor version of the EX40, where each motor packs 204 hp for a total of 408 horsepower. This version can go from zero to 100 km/h in just 4,9 seconds and up to an electronically-limited top speed of 180 km/h (as in any other Volvo, for that matter). The two-motor EX40 is only available with the 82-kWh battery pack.
In EUROCHARGE by Schaeffler, the EX40 SUV (Single Motor Extended Range version and Plus trim level) acts as Safety Car.

The feature list includes, among other things, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, two-zone air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistant, rain sensors, and a reverse camera.
Volvo also offers Glossy Black longitudinal bars, electric and heated exterior mirrors and a Type 2 charging cable.
